Audition Requirements for Percussion

JUNIOR SYMPHONIC ENSEMBLE (JSE)

Snare Drum

Any solo or etude demonstrating the following techniques: dynamics, rolls and flams.

Demonstrate knowledge of basic rudiments: paradiddles, flams, double-stroke rolls of various lengths (5-stroke, 7-stroke, 9-stroke, etc.)

Marimba or Xylophone

Any 2-mallet solo or etude demonstrating the following techniques: dynamics and rolls.

Demonstrate knowledge of major scales and key signatures up to four sharps and flats.

Timpani

Any 2 to 4 drum solo or etude demonstrating the following techniques: dynamics and rolls.

MUST demonstrate the ability to tune timpani with either a tuning fork, pitch pipe or pitch played on a mallet instrument WITHOUT the use of tuning gauges.

YOUNG SYMPHONIC ENSEMBLE (YSE)

Snare Drum

Any solo or etude demonstrating the following techniques: dynamics, rolls and ornaments (flams, drags, 4-stroke ruffs etc.). Suggested materials include:

          Intermediate Snare Drum Studies by Mitchell Peters

          Portraits in Rhythm by Anthony Cirone

          14 Modern Contest Solos by John S. Pratt

Demonstrate knowledge of basic rudiments: all paradiddles, flams, drags, double-stroke rolls of various lengths (5-stroke, 7-stroke, 9-stroke, etc.)

Marimba or Xylophone

Any 2-mallet solo or etude demonstrating the following techniques: dynamics, rolls, double stops, etc. Suggested materials include:

          Masterpieces for Marimba by James McMillan

          Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba and Vibraphone by Morris Goldenberg (any of           the Roman-numerated etudes in back)

Demonstrate knowledge of all major scales and key signatures. Knowledge of three types of minor scales suggested.

Timpani

Any 2 to 4 drum solo or etude demonstrating the following techniques: dynamics, rolls, articulate and legato passages. Suggested materials include:

          Intermediate Timpani Studies by Mitchell Peters

          Etuden for Timpani Vol. 1, 2 or 3 by Richard Hochrainer

MUST demonstrate the ability to tune timpani with either a tuning fork, pitch pipe or pitch played on a mallet instrument WITHOUT the use of tuning gauges.
