1. At what age can a child join the COS programs?
There is no minimum age requirement at COS. What is more important is the child's ability to read letters and numbers and having an interest in learning. Students are accepted until they graduate high school.

2. Does my child come to you, or do you come teach in our home?
All lessons and classes take place at COS. We do not provide in-home lessons. Only under special circumstances can in-home lessons be arranged, and this arrangement must be agreed upon by COS and the instructor.

3. How do you assign a teacher for my child?
COS will make teacher recommendations based on the student's audition, temperamant, and ability. We also take into consideration the teacher's availbility.

4. Can you help my child prepare for NYSSMA or competitions?
Yes, while teachers can certainly help students prepare for NYSSMA evaluation and competition, it is not COS' teaching philosophy and focus. We believe in equipping students with musical tools and training them to become well-rounded performers. We prefer to use competitions as a vehicle to learning and not the goal of learning.

5. How can I help my child choose an instrument to play?
One way is to expose your child to different instruments and their sounds. Take them to concerts and events where they can get to hear the instruments are and see how they work. Click on our concerts page for events you can take your child to, where they can discover instruments and even meet our student or faculty performers.

6. Where can I rent/buy instruments?
For beginners, local music stores would be a good source, which are listed in the yellow pages. For advancing students, you should consult your private instructor for recommendations of reputable dealers that specialize in the insturment.

7. Do you offer financial aid?
COS offers financial aid to students enrolled in our orchestral and chamber music programs. Assistance is awarded based on financial need at the discretion of the directors.
